Dear Korean Christians All Over The World:
전세계 한국 기독성도 여러분 :
Christmas is coming to us again, as the year 2003 is coming to an end. We all can see again the shining star that guided the three wise men (Magi) in all kinds of X-mas decorations. During these holiday season, I want to suggest my fellow Christians to do as I do:
2003년도가 끝자락에 이름에 따라, 우리는 또 다시 성탄절을 맞이하게 됩니다. 우리 모두는 온갖 종류의 크리스마스 장식들 속에서 동박박사 세 사람을 인도하였던 빛나는 별을 다시 볼 수 있습니다. 이번 성탄절 기간 동안, 나의 크리스챤 성도 여러분들에게 내가 하는 것처럼 같이 해 보실 것을 제안하고자 합니다.
As Magi saw and followed Jesusꡑ star 2000 years ago, close your eyes and leave yourself to follow the shining star in your heart. As the star Magi saw in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was, let the star in your heart go ahead of you until it stops. Where does it stop and where is it?
2000년전 동방박사들이 예수님의 별을 보고 따라왔던 것 처럼, 여러분들의 눈을 감고서 마음으로 빛나는 별을 따라 떠나 보십시오. 동박박사들이 동쪽에서 본 그 별이 아기예수가 태어난 곳에 멈출때 가지 그들을 앞장서 갔던 것 처럼, 여러분 마음속의 그 별이 멈출 때까지 여러분들을 앞장서 가게 합시다. 그 별이 어디서 멈췄나요? 그리고 그 별은 어디에 있나요?
The Christians all over the world will have a special worship for Christmas in their church and we are supposed to donate a special Christmas offering this Sunday. Before I prepared for my special offering, I closed my eyes and followed the star in my heart, expecting the star to lead me to the place where the Jesus is, where I can meet Jesus and talk with my savior. The star in my heart stopped over the strange place that I have never seen. The place I could see in my heart where the star stopped over is the small church in the rural area and the churchꡑs name is Maesong Young Rak Presbyterian Church in HwaseongSi, KyungKiDo, S. Korea. 전세계 모든 기독교인들은 그들의 교회에서 크리스마스 특별예배를 드리게 되며, 우리는 이번 주일날 성탄절헌금을 봉헌하게 됩니다. 나는 성탄절 헌금을 준비하기 전에, 나의 눈을 감고 마음속으로 그 별이 예수님이 계시는 곳, 예수님을 만날 수 있고 구세주 되시는 그분과 얘기나눌 수 있는 그곳으로 나를 인도하여 줄 것을 바라면서 그 별을 뒤따라 갔습니다.
마음속의 그 별은 내가 지금까지 한번도 가 본적이 없는 낯선 장소에 멈춰섰습니다. 별이 멈춰선, 내가마음속으로 볼 수 있었던 그 곳은 시골의 작은교회이고 그 교회의 이름은 매송영락교회이며 대한민국 경기도 화성시 매송면 천천리에 있습니다.
I have never attended this church and never listened to the message delivered by the pastor of this church. I have never met with his wife nor his children, never even one of the church members. But I know the pastor of this church through the NamGulSaꡑs web site, where NamGulSa stands for Invasion Tunnel Hunters Group (ITGH) that was organized to detect the North Koreaꡑs Infiltration Underground Tunnels (Ddangguls). His name is Pastor Kim Jin-chul, currently a senior pastor of this church.
나는 한번도 이 교회에 출석한 일이 없고, 그리고 한번도 이 교회의 목사님께서 인도하시는 설교말씀을 들은 적도 없습니다. 나는 한번도 목사님의 부인이나 그 자녀들을 만난 일이 없으며, 심지어 그 교회 성도 한사람 조차도 만난 일이 없습니다. 그렇지만 나는 북한의 침투지하터널을 찾기 위하여 조직된 남굴사( ' 남침땅굴을 찾는 사람들 '의 약칭 )의 웹싸이트를 통하여 이 교회 목사님을 알게 되었습니다. 그의 이름은 현재 이 교회의 주임목사이신 김진철목사님이십니다.
Let me introduce him a little bit to you:
He had worked as a field header of ITHG. From March 1 to June 20, ꡑ03, he had worked at the Hwaseong tunnel site, along with one of his church members. He overworked himself and got hurt, so he had to be treated at the local hospital. His work was not supported by the government, but supported by the contributions and donations of Korean people. Even his church donated $30,000 (30,000,000 won) for his work. The ITHG was out of fund and the Ddanggul site was filled up by the Rohꡑs regime.
잠시 여러분들에게 그분을 소개하겠습니다
그는 남굴사(ITHG)의 현장본부장으로 일하였었습니다. 2003년 3월 1일부터 6월 20일까지 그는 자신의 교회 성도중의 한분과 함께 화성땅굴 현장에서 일해 왔었습니다. 그는 자신을 너무 혹사한 나머지 다치게 되었고, 인근 병원에서 치료를 받아야만 했습니다. 그가 작업하는동안 정부의 지원은 없었으며, 다만 한국 민간인들의 기부와 헌금에 의한 지원이 있을 뿐이었습니다. 그의 교회조차 작업비용으로 30,000불 ( 3천만원 )을 헌금할 정도였습니다. 남굴사는 재정이 바닥났으며 땅굴현장은 노무현정권에 의하여 뒤덮혀 졌습니다.
But before the site was filled up, he sent his letter along with my letter to President Bush to inform that the Hwaseong tunnel site might be critical to the security of thirty eight thousand American US soldiers and their families in Korea as well as the national security of S. Korea. In response to his letter, Mr. Straub, Director of Office of Korean Affairs, US Department of State, sent his letter on behalf of President Bush to me. I believe that the US would not ignore the Hwasung Ddanggul site, even though it was filled up and his letter filled with his tears would be kept in President Bushꡑs desk.

His effort and all kinds of troubles he has faced so far did not vanish in waste, In fact, his sweats, pain, and troubles would yield a great result for his fellow Koreans. Now he returned as a full-time pastor to his church, only to face with much worse financial difficulties:
그의 노력, 그리고 그가 지금까지 맞닥들여왔던 온갖 종류의 어려움들은 허무하게 사라지지 않습니다. 사실, 그의 땀과 고통 그리고 어려움은 그의 동포한국인들에게 위대한 결과를 가져올 것입니다. 지금 그는 더욱 악화된 경제적 어려움에 직면한 채, 시무하는 교회의 전담목사로 복귀하였습니다.
The Jesusꡑ star that leads me to this small Maesong Young Rak Presbyterian Church, asked me to present with gifts, as Magi presented the baby Jesus with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. I decide to contribute small amount of offering as the gift for this church and set aside that amount as offering. This offering has nothing to do with the ITHG, but simply for the offering to the church.
여기 작은 매송영락장로교회로 나를 인도한 예수님의 별은, 동방박사가 아기예수께 황금과 유향과 몰약을 선물로 바친 것 처럼, 나에게 선물할 것을 요청하였습니다. 나는 이 교회를 위한 선물로써 약간의 헌금을 하려고, 그 헌금할 액수 만큼 제쳐두기로 결심하였습니다. 이 헌금은 남굴사와는 상관이 없으며 단순히 교회에 헌금조로 하는 것입니다.
Dear my fellow Christians. Would you kindly follow the shining star and stay this small church for a while? Would you kindly help this young pastor who devoted himself to working for the freedom of Korea? Some people have been criticizing this young pastor for his work for the Namgulsa, but just think about the Vietnamese religious leaders who did not do anything but to criticize the regime and after the collapse of Vietnam they were executed, imprisoned, or fleeted from the country. Even take look at some of the current corrupted pastors who are seeking for some worldly things, such as big money, great fame, and worldly pleasures. But Pastor Kim Jin-Chul have followed his conscience seeking for the truth and showed his pure love and patriotism for his homeland, Korea. The only problem is the Rohꡑs regime has not recognized his patriotic activities.
나의 동포 크리스챤 여러분. 여러분들도 기꺼이 빛나는 별을 따라와, 잠시 이 작은 교회에 머물지 않으시렵니까? 여러분들도 한국의 자유를 위하여 일하는데 자신을 바친 이 젊은 목회자를 기꺼이 돕지 않으시렵니까? 몇몇 사람들은 남굴사를 위하여 그가 일한 것을 가지고 이 젊은 목회자를 비난하고 있습니다. 그러나 체제를 위하여 그 어떤 일도 하지 않고 체제를 비난만 하다가 베트남 붕괴후에 살해당하거나 투옥되거나 혹은 그 나라를 등진 베트남의 종교지도자들을 생각해 보십시오.
심지어, 많은 돈, 큰 명성 그리고 세상적인 즐거움같은 세속적인 것들을 추구하는 현재의 타락한 몇몇 목회자들을 보십시오. 그러나 김진철목사님은 진리를 추구하는 그의 양심을 따랐으며, 그의 조국 대한민국에 대한 순수한 사랑과 애국심을 보여주었습니다. 다만 노무현 정권이 그의 애국적인 행동을 알아주지 않는다는 사실이 문제라면 문제일 뿐 입니다.
Fellow Christians. This Sunday, when you enter your church for X-mas worship service, would you remember his small church and pastor Kim who is facing the current financial difficulties? Arenꡑt you willing to help this church by sending your generous offering or by sending the encouraging letter to him if you canꡑt afford? Yes, I know we have so many places that need our help and support, but helping this young patriotic pastor is a special kind of spending our heart for our Godꡑs work.
동포 크리스챤 여러분. 이번 주일날, 크리스마스 예배를 드리러 여러분의 교회에 들어갔을때, 현재 재정적인 어려움에 처해있는 김목사님과 그의 작은 교회를 기억하지 않으시렵니까? 여러분들은 아낌없는 헌금을 함으로써 또는, 할 수만 있다면 용기를 북돋우어 주는 편지를 보냄으로써 이 교회를 기꺼이 돕지 않으시렵니까? 물론 우리의 도움과 지원이 필요한, 아주 많은 장소들이 있음을 나는 알고 있습니다. 그러나 이 젊은 애국적 목회자를 돕는 것은 하나님의 일을 위하여 우리의 정성을 드리는 특별한 종류의 일입니다.
