뜻을 가지고 사는 인생에게는 결코 쉬운 길이 있을 수 없습니다. 남들이 보기에 가치를 평가받고 인정받는 그러한 삶의 길은 많은 도전과 고뇌의 길이 앞에 놓여있으며, 이러한 도전들을 슬기롭게 극복하기 위해서는 피나는 노력과 불굴의 의지에 바탕 한 현명한 판단과 단호하고 일관성이 전제된 행동을 요합니다.

이러한 의미에서 필자가 1995년도에 영국에서 박사학위 논문을 쓰면서 그 당시 힘든 유학생의 삶속에 투영된 필자의 모습과 미래에 대한 불확실성을 염두 해 두고, 유학 생활 속에서의 일상의 상념을 담고 미래에 대한 필자자신의 희망을 일군 필자의 영어 시 하나를 소개함으로써 오늘 많은 우려와 걱정 속에서 내일을 일구는 많은 젊은이들과 이러한 삶의 여정의 고뇌를, 희망을 잠시 나눌까 합니다.

다음의 시는 1995년도 필자가 눈이 내리는 한 겨울 어느 날 당시 유학중이던 HULL대 도서관에서 창밖을 보면서 상념으로 지은 기억이 나며, 그 당시 이 시는 국제시인협회(International Society of Poets)가 선정한 명예의 전당(Hall of Fame) 전시용 시로 추천이 되어서 세계인들의 많은 사랑을 받은 시로 기억이 됩니다.

By the Name of Hope and Love

Messages of solitude overwhelms me from winter trees

Sometimes by dreams, sometimes by despair and uncertainty

I continue to travel the road of solitude and dream

As has been the turbulent history of mankind

Messages of happiness capture me from the dawning

Sometimes by expectation, sometimes by stark reality

I continue the long march of life by the name of solitude

As has been the life of a Saint

Messages of challenges awakens me from turbulent seawaves

Sometimes by courage, sometimes by fear

I continue the long journey of challenges by the name of hope

As has bee the dreams of an ambitious boy

Messages of hope comes from my deep heart

Sometimes by dream, Sometimes by energy and spirit

I continue to walk in the darkness by the name of hope

As has been the life of Jesus Christ
